On the surface of your lawn there may appear carpets of dry vegetable scraps. In small quantities, they might have a beneficial role, while in big quantities, they might lead to the destruction of your lawn. In small quantities, thatch protects the soil moisture and deals the minor slides. But if it develops in a faster rhythm than normal, it leads to a layer of turf.
This layer is an insulator with a very low pH and fights again the transfer of water, nutrients and oxygen. In disadvantageous conditions, the thatch can get up to 1 cm over a year. Above this limit, it can retain up to 20 liters of water per square meter, therefore stopping it from getting into the soil. This will be a big problem, especially during summer or other hot periods. Being able to have an effective time aerating lawn eliminates up to 1 kilo of thatch per square meter.
The negligence of the mowed grass should be decided for every year. Sometimes, it is required to leave it on the lawn. For instance, sunny days, repeated mowing and a highly active biological lawn are reasons to let the “garbage” on the lawn.
Lawn aeration consists in the procedure of taking away the thatch layer of your lawn with the help of a special machine. The most optimal period for aeration is spring or autumn. However, you must pick a sunny day. Aerating on a windy or rainy day will cause trouble to you and your machine due to the mud.
In a small yard, you can use a rake, while on a big lawn you should rent or buy a lawn aerator. The quality of your aeration depends on the distance of the machine knives used in the process. A lawn that hasn’t been taken care of for a long period can be brought to the initial state with repeated aerations.
