Lawn mowing is an art. The techniques that you choose can mean the difference between an attractive or an untidy lawn. Each year, there are hundreds of people who get injured while using mowers. Gas and electric machines can both be dangerous if they are not used properly, so it’s important to be safe to avoid getting hurt, whilst carrying out your lawn care.
All popular brands have a lawn mowing guide or manual that specifies the functions of the machine. You should become familiar with all of these features and learn how and when to properly service the mower. For example, check all the bolts and nuts before using to make sure everything is fastened properly. If something seems to be wrong with the engine, it is best to stop using it as soon as possible to avoid causing long term damage.
The majority of lawn mowing accidents is caused by flying debris. Before starting, always scan the grass for any rocks or other objects that may get in the way of the spinning blade. You should also wear proper clothing to protect your skin from getting cut. Long pants and heavy shoes will provide excellent protection, but make sure it is not loose, otherwise it may get caught in the blade. Some engines can be very noisy, so you may want to wear ear plugs or muffs to protect your ears. Whilst mowing, be sure to keep all pets and children away from the area in case of flying debris.
Fueling a hot engine can be dangerous, so allow the machine to cool for ten minutes before adding fuel. Do not fuel while on the lawn, because spills can be ignited by blade sparks. Any spills should be immediately cleaned up using a rag. If fuel is accidentally split onto your lawn use a watering can to wash it off as quickly as possible, other wise you will be left with an unattractive lawn brown patch of dead grass
