Satin sheets are made of silk and various artificial fibres. Silk is an ancient and lustrous fabric made from silk thread. Silk was imported from the Chinese city of Quanzhou (Tsinkiang). Quanzhou was called Zayton in Arabic in the middle ages. Satin is a derivation over time of the word Zayton. Satin sheets are woven from silk, nylon, polyester and rayon in such a way as to give a smooth shine on one side and a dull finish on the other side. The weave of the fabric is dominated by the warp. The sheen comes from the high number of floats in the fabric. Deliberate missed interlacing between the warp and the weft create this extraordinary material used for making satin sheets. Satin was earlier only made from silk but today it is made as a mixture of nylon, polyester and cotton. The material made out of silk and cotton is called sateen. Modern satin is dull on one side.
Satin sheets are affordable today because of the mixture of man made fibres in it. Satin has been used as a fabric since the twelfth century. Today satin sheets and satin lingerie are associated with sensuality. Satin sheets are ideal for warm weather as their texture makes them cool to the touch. They also absorb moisture adding to the coolness.
In one way modern satin sheets are better because they can be machine washed. Pure silk satin sheets have to be sent to the dry cleaners for cleaning and that eventually proves very expensive. Silk is made from silk worms thus making silk an animal product. The washing and care of silk sheets depends on the content of rayon, nylon, cotton or polyester. The drying of the satin sheets should be on the drying line. Even while washing in the machine the satin should be washed with a mild detergent and on the delicate setting.
Care has to be taken while purchasing satin sheets. Woven satin sheets with a high thread count will have a better feel and glow. The silk in the satin sheets is graded by momme weight. The momme weight should be between twelve and nineteen. The thread count should also be high. It should be at least four hundred. Sheets with momme weight less than twelve are very thin and most likely to tear easily.
Satin is available in many beautiful colours. These are gold, silver, burgundy, purple, sky blue, black and yellow. Satin sheets are also available in printed designs. Satin is a material which gives a luxurious look to any room. Satin can be used for sheets and as a curtain material. Satin sheets are thick enough to be used as bed spreads. Satin sheets can be given as a gift too and can be combined with satin lingerie for a great intimate evening. The smooth feel of the material gives an ideal setting for a romantic evening especially in colours of deep red or black. Satin lingerie and satin sheets are an expression of love. Satin sheets are truly the stuff that dreams are made of.
