How about starting to get your food from local suppliers, the quality is often much better and it’s fresher too.Try and locate your local farmers market and support it if possible.You’ll probably find that there are lots of local businesses able to suply the stuff you buy from the faceless supermarkets.You can support local suppliers and enjoy better food quality at the same time.Local suppliers can also tell you about how their products are produced, what chemicals, pesticides are used for instance.Much of our food doesn’t need to be trucked in from far flungs places, save the fuel and shop locally whenever you can.
Also how about bringing you own lunch to work in some tupperware, it will save you lots of money.It also eliminates the waste from packaging that is normally just discarded.When you shop locally, you can also pick out the size or amount you need as well. Be sure you have non-plastic, reusable tableware in your lunch, as well. Food packaged by the serving is a huge waste of packaging, instead of purchasing mass quantities. If you will take the extra time to compost your left over fruits and veggies, your garbage going to the landfills can be decreased. What if you don’t keep a garden? Well, there’s always a person not too far away, perhaps a neighbor, who’ll be delighted to take all the compost you can give them.
There are some things you can do when preparing food to help economize energy. When you are boiling water, use a lid on the pot, as it boils much more quickly when it is covered. Be sure to turn down the heat as soon as it begins to boil. Pre-heating the oven also wastes energy, as this is not required for virtually all foods. One more thing that will preserve energy is to turn off the oven for the last 15 minutes, when cooking such things as roasts, because the heat that is left will finish the cooking.
Does all this sound like a great waste of time to you? Well, nothing could be more untrue. Several of these things are so simple you could do them on a daily basis. You’d be amazed at how much energy could be saved if every person would simply do this handful of minor, basic things.
