Having a nice patio, desk, or garden area is a great way to be able to increase the livable square footage of your home. Sure, it doesn’t count in the official measurements, but being able to have that additional outdoor living space is definitely nice, especially when the weather is beautiful outside. Having a nice place to hang out outdoors requires some furniture, though.
Outdoor furniture is all different, but most of types have similar features. They are made out of durable materials that are able to withstand some of the harsher weather conditions, such as hail or heavy winds, as well as animals and other things hitting the furniture or bumping it. They are also usually made out of waterproof materials that help to keep them lasting longer. The problem with these two qualities that are focused on durability is that they will make the furniture often times quite uncomfortable to sit on.
One way to reduce the comfort factor (or lack thereof) of outdoor furniture is to add outdoor furniture cushions to your furniture. Depending on the style of furniture you have, you can either get cushions that are made specifically for your type of furniture, or you can get general ones that fit many different pieces of outdoor furniture. Often times patio chair cushions come in warm, outdoor tones such as browns, greens, yellows, oranges, etc. But, you really can get any color or style that you want and that will go nicely with your garden decor. You can even get black patio cushions if that is more of your style.
In addition to adding style to your outdoor furniture, cushions can also add some protection. They can help the main seating areas to not be worn down, especially with furniture types like rattan or wicker. But, cushions can have their own issues too. You’ll definitely want to make sure that they do not get wet, and if they do, that they are aired out properly before any further use. Mold and mildew can build up in the cushions if they remain wet, which will decrease the life of the cushion and will also make them unsightly and even smelly. Better quality patio cushions will be made with materials that dry out quicker and can resist mold and mildew better, so it is worth investing a bit more in cushions that will hold up better over time.
When not in use, it is best to store cushions away, either in a garage, shed, storage bench or other location so they are not constantly subjected to weather. Not only will continually soggy patio cushions deteriorate and become unusable quickly, but those left out in the sun on a regular basis may fade prematurely or even crack if they are made from vinyl instead of fabric.
Outdoor patio cushions can be a great addition to your outdoor patio furniture and can not only make furniture more comfortable to sit on, but can also add to the decorative style of your outdoor space as well. It is important to keep in mind, however, that after making your initial investment in the cushions, you should take some care to keep them looking their best by protecting them from constant exposure to the weather.
